Deputies responded to the St. Augustine Shores neighborhood following a report of an attempted car burglary in front of a home in the 600 block of Bahia Court at 4:15 a.m.

The 52-year old victim told deputies he had his dog in the front yard when he saw the dome light of his vehicle turned on. As the victim approached the vehicle, a man fled on foot toward Christina Drive, and the victim called the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies found a second vehicle they said was entered at another home in the same block. The 58-year-old victim told them there was nothing missing, but it appeared that someone had smeared feces on a side window of the vehicle.

As deputies searched the area, Deputy Thomas Bickhart saw a man matching the description of the suspect riding a bicycle in the 400 block of Shores Boulevard. When the man saw the deputy, he jumped off the bicycle and ran into the woods, deputies said.

The man, identified as Zaharias, was found a short time later hiding behind a tree and was taken into custody without further incident.

Deputies said additional charges are pending further investigation.
