JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 19-year-old woman was killed and two other young women were hurt Friday morning in a crash on Interstate 295 at Old St. Augustine Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
State troopers said the 19-year-old Haven Shonio, of Vermont, was a passenger in a Toyota 4Runner that was driven by 19-year-old Karen Gregory, of Ponte Vedra Beach. The two, along with a second passenger, Melissa Martinez, of Jacksonville, were headed north on I-295 when the vehicle approached a pickup truck, tried to steer around it and lost control.
Troopers said the SUV struck the right side of the truck, then went across the lanes and struck the left side of tractor-trailer. The SUV overturned and came to a rest on its wheels, sideways in the left and center lanes.
Shonio died at the scene. Both Martinez and Gregory were taken to UF Health Jacksonville with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 60-year-old Daniel Kuntson and the drivers of two pickup trucks involved, Ioan Popa and Roger Blandford Jr., were not hurt.
A trooper on a traffic stop on the opposite side of the highway witnessed the crash just before 11:30 a.m. and immediately called for help.
Channel 4 learned that all three young women were students at Flagler College.
Northbound traffic on I-295 remained blocked for more then three hours while the accident was investigated and cleared.
