BAKER COUNTY, Fla. – A deputy-involved shooting then a high-speed pursuit along Interstate 10 that stretched through four counties and more than 80 miles ended with a crash just before 11 a.m. Thursday in the Sanderson area of Baker County, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The driver of the car, 26-year-old Terrick Lundy (pictured, below), of Jacksonville, was arrested after a manhunt that lasted about two hours, investigators said.
Deputies said Lundy and 31-year-old Ronnie Williams, of St. Augustine, were pulled over in Madison County for speeding, and when a deputy approached the car, they took off. The deputy fired at the suspect vehicle before it fled the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The chase involving multiple agencies topped 100 mph at times and went through Suwannee and Columbia counties and into Baker County, where the car went off the highway and crashed while swerving to avoid stop sticks, according to the FHP. Deputies in Columbia County also put down stop sticks, but the driver drove around them.
Williams was apprehended after the crash into a tree, but Lundy disappeared into the woods on foot, deputies said. Williams was taken to a Macclenny hospital, then flown to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in critical condition.
Dozens of law enforcement officers from several agencies searched for the driver with a helicopter and K9 teams. Lundy, who investigators believed was armed, was arrested about 1 p.m. and booked into the Baker County jail. No firearm was recovered.
"As he was running, fleeing from the law enforcement authorities, he was stripping his clothing, which kind of left a trail, if you will. And that provided great assistance for the bloodhounds to track," FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan said.
Bryan said Lundy was found less than a quarter-mile from the crash site and surrendered when confronted by authorities.
"At this point, he's being very cooperative as far as answering questions that's being asked of him," Bryan said. "However, further investigation will be conducted by our investigators."
Investigators said they found a felony amount of marijuana in the suspects' vehicle.
Lundy has prior arrests for drug possession, including marijuana and cocaine.
During the manhunt, the Florida Highway Patrol diverted traffic off I-10 at the U.S. Highway 90 Sanderson exit. It was reopened after the suspect was caught.
