As the driver entered a curve in the roadway, he lost control of the car, police said. They said as he tried to regain control, the car began rotating in the roadway.

The vehicle traveled across the road, jumped the concrete curb, continued across the concrete sidewalk and struck a wooden telephone pole, police said. They said car was traveling backward at that point and struck the pole in the center of the trunk area. The car then rotated into a large ditch.

Both occupants were taken to UF Health Jacksonville. The 19-year-old's injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

The 20-year-old man in the passenger seat suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police said neither was wearing a seatbelt. They said there were no indication that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Police said from the evidence at the scene, the distance the car traveled and the amount of damage from the impact with the pole, it appears speed was a factor in the crash.

The northbound lanes of Monument Road were expected to remain closed until about 2:30.
