2 qualify for sheriff's race; property appraiser to run for mayor

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two candidates qualified to run for sheriff next year, and another person qualified to run for a City Council seat. But the bigger local political story Monday is that Property Appraiser Jim Overton says he's going to run for mayor.

Ken Jefferson and Rob Schoonover sent to the elections office to file paperwork to run for sheriff in the March 2015 election.  Tony Cummings, Jay Farhat, Jimmy Holderfield and Mike Williams have already qualified in the race to replace Sheriff John Rutherford, who cannot run again due to term limits.

All six candidates have law enforcement experience.

Also on Monday, Lisa King qualified to run for City Council District 2, which runs east from the Clifton area along the river through a strip of the Southside and much of East Arlington.  She joins three other qualified candidates: Lindsey Brock, Al Ferraro and Robert Phillips.

Two-term Duval County Property Appraiser Jim Overton said on Monday that he will qualify later this week to run for mayor.  Currently, incumbent Alvin Brown and political newcomer Tiffany Wingo are the only candidates who have qualified with the Supervisor of Elections.  Others are expected to enter the race.

All city of Jacksonville races are non-partisan.  Qualifying is open through Jan. 12, 2015. The first election is scheduled for March 24, 2015, with the general election eight weeks later.
