Troopers sid Stuckey had no lighting equipment or a safety helmet, and because of the dark roadway, the driver of the van, 47-year-old Pamela Robertson, of Crescent City, failed to see him until it was too late.

The van's front hit Stuckey's bike, and Stuckey was thrown into the roadway. He died at the scene.

Troopers said speed was not a factor in the crash.
