5-year-old suffered broken bones, severed fingers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 5-year-old boy who was seriously injured in a freak accident last month is still in and out of surgery as he tries to recover.

Ben Bowersox's arm was caught in a cable of a motorized door at Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport, breaking both of his arms and severing some of his fingers.

Ben was rushed to Duke University Hospital in North Carolina, where doctors have performed a number of complex surgeries to repair his arms and fingers.

He underwent another surgery Wednesday on his left hand. And Friday morning, doctors returned him to the intensive care unit because he had a fever and infection. Ben was then rushed back into surgery so doctors could find the cause of his infection.

Ben's father is the worship pastor at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville.

The church is updating the community on Ben's progress on its website.
