Brevard teen speaks out after shark bite

Teen bit by shark at Melbourne Beach

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. – A teenager is speaking out after he was bitten by a shark Saturday morning in Brevard County.

Michael Adler, 16, discovered more abrasions on his right inner thigh as he recovers in the hospital from a shark bite to his left foot.  At first, Adler thought it was a second bite, but doctors confirmed it was just an abrasion and not a bite.

Adler was surfing in Sebastian Inlet off A1A in Melbourne Beach.

On his last wave in, Adler said a shark bit his foot while it was hanging off his board.

He was able to break free and paddle to shore where a random man helped use the leash of his surf board as tourniquet and a wrapped a towel around his bloody foot.

The teenager was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center where he was being treated. He is now recovering from surgery, requiring 20 stitches to repair his tendons.

Doctors said he will make a full recovery.
