Church members gather to remember MLK

Dozens gathered for anniversary of MLK death

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Members of the Mount Zion church in Downtown Jacksonville turned out to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Friday night

King was shot and killed outside the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. 46 years ago.

"It's important to know our history and pass that history down to our children, because as Dr. King used to say, 'You have to know where you came from to know where you're going,'" said Gene Logan.

Community groups gathered Friday at Mount Zion Church to sing, speak and show their support for what they are calling an "ongoing struggle" for equality.

Angie Nixon told Channel 4 that her two biggest struggles are the war on drugs and the school prison pipeline.

"Right now, one in three boys are expected to go to prison and that's something that we shouldn't tolerate as a community, as a whole," said Nixon.

Friday night's ceremony ended in a candle light vigil and the group had the spirit of King in their hearts, something they hope to pass on for the next generation of dreamers.

"It's time for us to start breaking down walls and building silos and building bridges and coming together for the greater good of the people and the community as a whole," said Nixon.
