COCOA, Fla. - One woman was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting inside a Cocoa home, where at least three children were also staying, deputies said.
The double-shooting occurred Monday afternoon in the 1500 block of Clearlake Road, across from Brevard Community College's Cocoa campus.
Cocoa police say the small children, all estimated to be under 7 years old ran to a neighbor's house and the neighbor called 911.
When Cocoa police arrived, they discovered one woman, who police say is mother to the children, in her mid-20s to mid-30s dead inside of the home. Family members told WKMG-TV the woman is Lydia Bradford.
"[She would] watch the children for me when I go to the grocery store, help me clean up my house," said relative Mary Neely. " I'm just going to miss her so much."
Another woman, who family members say was Bradford's mother, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition with at least five gunshot wounds to her head and upper body.
Police believe the victims may have been targeted and are searching for the shooter. A gun was found nearby, but no sign of the shooter, according to police.
The Department of Children and Families has taken custody of the children because they may be in danger, officials said.
Neighbors told Local 6 they were shocked at the shooting.
"It's uncalled for," said neighbor Jacqueline Satterthwaite. "It's supposed to be a day of celebration- it's Martin Luther King Day, then you have the President's Inauguration and something like this happens."
