Crews rescue worker stuck in vat of tar

Rescue crews help get 45-year-old man out of large vat

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Crews worked for hours to help rescue a worker for Atlantic Coast Asphalt, who was stuck in a large vat, knee-deep in tar Friday afternoon in Northwest Jacksonville.

According to Jacksonville Fire-Rescue, the 45-year-old man was OK.

Fire-Rescue crews used a crane to try to get the man out.

Rescuers said the man was cutting a steel pipe and moving about on top of tar in side the vat, and when he failed to move and interrupted the viscosity of the product, he got stuck in the tar.

Rescuers were giving the man air to make sure heat and fumes didn't affect him.

Two rescue members were sent inside the tank with the man. They were trying to use peanut oil to loosen up the tar.

After 10 p.m. Friday, rescue crews were able to help get the 45-year-old man out after being stuck for over seven hours.
