FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. - A robbery suspect was arrested Thursday on multiple charges after he led deputies on a brief manhunt until authorities say he was located and detained by a K9 unit at a home on Elder Street in Daytona North.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office said the incident began around 6 p.m. Wednesday when deputies received a report of a home invasion at 1605 Laurel Avenue in Daytona North.
The resident, 52-year-old Robert Elkins, told deputies that Edmon Welch, 32, had entered the rear of his home.
Elkins told deputies Welch walked through the unlocked door and pointed a handgun at him and demanded $200.
Deputies said Elkins told Welch he had no money and a visitor, 54-year-old Johnny McCaskell, gave Welch $10 and two beers to get him to leave the home.
Later Wednesday, McCaskell reported he was approached by Welch at the convenience store on County Road 305 around 11:30 p.m. There, deputies said Welch reportedly threatened McCaskell and brandished a gun.
Deputies were unable to locate Welch on Wednesday evening.
Around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, deputies went to Welch's parents' home on Elder Street in an attempt to find him and arrest him for aggravated assault on McCaskell.
When deputies encountered him, authorities said Welch fled the scene, running into a wooded area behind the home.
Deputies launched a manhunt, assisted by Flagler County's Fireflight and units from the Bunnell Police Department, and located him covered in dense underbrush in the woods near the intersection of Willow Street and Lancewood Street.
Deputies said K9 Marko was able to apprehend Welch at the scene. As part of the search, deputies had stopped passing motorists vehicles to determine if Welch was attempting to leave the area.
Welch, who lists an address as 181 Ohio Avenue, Bunnell, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest without violence and tampering with a witness, according to deputies.
Welch is being held in the Flagler County Inmate Facility in lieu of $11,500 bond. Elkins declined to file charges in connection with the home invasion and robbery.
"Mr. Welch had become a problem in the Daytona North area," said Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre. "I am glad we have serious charges against him. Hopefully, he will be confined for a lengthy of time so the residents there can have some peace."
Deputies said Welch was recently arrested by the Bunnell Police Department in connection with the June 29 home invasion on North Anderson Street.
In that incident, Welch is charged with assaulting the homeowner, Ray Mercer, after breaking into his home and demanding money. Deputies said he was also charged with battery on a person over 65 years of age, petit theft and possession of cocaine. He was released July 10 after posting $14,000 bond.
