Deputies: Nassau County school volunteer had sex with Yulee student

37-year-old woman accused of having sexual relationship with 16-year-old

YULEE, Fla. – A parent volunteer at Yulee Middle and High schools has been arrested, accused of having sex with a 16-year-old high school student.

Nassau County deputies arrested 37-year-old LeShawn Rene Shaw on Dec. 1 after the teen's father told deputies about the sexual relationship.

Shaw owns a photography business Rene Shaw. The Nassau County School District said she was an approved parent volunteer with children at the schools and took photos for the bands and athletic teams.

Shaw, who's charged with lewd and lascivious behavior on a victim older than 12, is out of jail and at home.

According to her arrest report, the 16-year-old boy she's accused of having sex with told deputies he and Shaw had a sexual relationship that began a month ago. The boy said he had sexual intercourse with Shaw. The boy's father reported that to police.

Shaw spoke to Channel 4's Erica Rakow at her home Thursday but didn't want to give her side of the story. She said she is in the process of hiring an attorney.

School District spokeswoman Sharyl Wood said when people apply to be a volunteer, they are screened, and "if the person is not found to be listed on the sex offender registries, the person's name is forwarded to the School Board for approval."

"It's weird. She's, I take it, probably in her 30s, and she's probably going out with someone who's 16 or 17," said Tom Vafiadas, whose daughter is a junior at Yulee High School. "Yeah, they need to do something about that quickly."

Vafiadas said he's alarmed this happened.

Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson said these cases have become all too common, but the least it could do is remind parents to constantly be alert to signs of inappropriate behavior.

"We've seen a large number of adults having affairs with children, with kids, have sexual relations with kids, and it's gone too far," Jefferson said.
