Deputies: Teen attempts to steal same car twice

16-year-old admits to grand theft auto

LAKE CITY, Fla. – A Lake City resident was almost the victim of having his BMW stolen twice in a four-day period.

A suspect burglarized David Rader's 2003 Hummer at about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, finding the key fob to Rader's other vehicle, a 2008 BMW. The suspect then left with the BMW.

The BMW was located at Lake Isabella Park about 12 hours later, after Rader posted the theft information on Facebook. However, the key fob was not located at that time.

Four days later, on Sunday, another attempt was made to steal the BMW, but the car alarm went off.

Rader saw several people running from his yard and called the police. After the police responded, officers patrolled the area for suspects.

When Officer Ryan Gutshell spotted three juveniles at a Stop N' Go, he made contact with them due to the amount of property crime in the area.

After a consensual pat down for weapons, the BMW key fob was found in the pocket of a 16-year-old. The key fob was confirmed to be Rader's.

Deputies said the teen admitted to committing the first grand theft auto as well as the reattempt. They said the teen admitted to several other vehicle thefts in the area.
