Driver dies in single-car crash in Bunnell

BUNNELL, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver of a car died Thursday morning when his car left U.S. 1 and struck a tree.

The FHP said Dewey Thompson's 2001 Honda left the road in Bunnell about 6:30 a.m. and struck a tree. Thompson, 49, died at the scene.

A 25-year-old passenger, Robert Thompson, told investigators that when driver passed out near the intersection of Moody Boulevard and U.S. 1., he grabbed the wheel and steered the car toward the Flagler County Library parking lot. The car hit a guide wire and a palm tree before coming to a stop.

Both the driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, according to the FHP report.  The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Flagler County Fire-Rescue paramedic. His cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

The passenger was not hurt.
