PALM COAST, Fla. - One driver died after a crash involving two tractor-trailers on Interstate 95 in Flagler County early Tuesday morning.
About 4 a.m. Tuesday, Florida Highway Patrol crews were called to the crash on I-95 north near Palm Coast Parkway.
Troopers says a tractor-trailer transporting fuel and a tractor trailer collided. Sgt. Dylan Bryan said the tanker was engulfed in flames.
"Immediately after the collision, the tanker overturned and quickly ignited," said Bryan. "That vehicle subsequently burned here on the interstate."
The driver of the fuel truck, Christopher Mceuen, 41, died at the scene.
Northbound travelers like Jill Carlyle were detoured at State Road 100, miles south of the crash. Christmas Eve traffic was backed up for miles.
"It was just stopped. Stop and go," Carlyle said. "And it was all over US-1. Was probably a good 10-mile backup."
Places of business just off the highway were affected by the road closure as well. Vicki Beard, manager of the Florida Citrus Center, said her store was nearly empty today. She said although today wasn't great for business, it's important to remember a family lost someone close to them on Christmas Eve.
"I pray for the families that have lost their loved ones today," Beard said. "It's tragic."
The driver of the other semi involved was not hurt, but was arrested after the crash. His arrest is not related to the accident, but because he had a warrant out for his arrest because he failed to pay child support. He remains in jail on $2,000 bond.
FHP is continuing to investigate the crash.
