JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Eight days after police say a driver died in a fiery crash of a car police were trying to stop, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office released the victim's name.
Jermaine Plummer, 28, died in the crash.
It happened about 2:30 a.m. on March 23 after an officer spotted a car traveling at a high rate of speed north Arlington Road near the intersection of Lillian Road. As the officer tried to pull the speeding car over, the driver lost control. The vehicle went airborne, crashed into a wall and caught fire.
"The officers on scene tried to render aid, but the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief Adam Brown. "It's important to note that that person was driving at a high rate of speed and running red lights way before officers got involved in this whatsoever."
Police are still investigating why Plummer was speeding or if alcohol played a factor in the crash.
