Family of Mayport murder victim speaks

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. – The family of a man murdered in Mayport on Monday night is still hoping his killer is caught.

Harold Long, 19, was found dead in a backyard on Cypress Landing Drive by police after residents reported shots were fired in the neighborhood.

Family members in Atlantic Beach are still in shock over his killing and they want to know why he was killed.

"It's heartbreaking but we're trying to stay strong for him," said Javari Long, Harold Long's brother. "I just seen him like the day before the tragedy."

Harold's aunt, Verneisya Jackson, said the family has been coping, but it's been hard.

"He was very loving, very caring," Jackson said. "Always had a smile on his face, and everybody loved him."

Harold Long had recently been released from jail and has a lengthy list of drug charges, but his family said that doesn't define who he truly was.

His family members said they're waiting as patiently as they can for any news from police that the killer has been caught.

"Basically, I just want justice for my brother," said Marquis Curry. "I'm telling everybody on Facebook there's no retaliation toward nobody. I love everybody. I just want to make this the most peaceful way I can and jus get justice for my brother."

"We just leave it up to God and let God handle it," said Javari Long. "We ain't seeking no revenge. We just put it up to God. We hope they have justice for him soon."

The family is holding a vigil for Harold on Saturday from 6-8 p.m. at the Donner Park Community Center on George Street in Atlantic Beach.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
