JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A fire on the Northside late Sunday night that has left a family with next to nothing could be the result of arson.
The fire happened at a home on Haddock Road, just off Lem Turner Road on the Northside sometime between 10 and 11 p.m.
Nobody was injured in the fire, but the family that lived in the home is now having to find somewhere else to live.
"I dropped down to my knees and I lost it because my kids lost almost everything," said Chelsie Cabrices. "We have hardly anything left."
Cabrices recounts her emotions of watching nearly all that they owned go up in flames. She lived in the house with her fiance and two sons, one 8 years old and one 16 months old. More than the material things that were lost, her fiance said they lost memories that can't be replaced.
"My 16-month-old son, he learned to walk in that house. He learned to talk in that house," John Cloer said.
The family is now having to stay with other family in the area. They said that thankfully the kids had a few toys at the houses of family members, and each had a couple of outfits to wear, but not much.
Each day, it's still hard when they pass the house.
"It scares me. The only thing I can think about is what if we were in there?" Cabrices said. "What if me and my kids and my fiance were in there. The way it looks, we probably wouldn't have made it out."
Even though the 8-year-old boy knows that they lost all that they had, Cabrices said he was still able to find something positive from this fire.
"He put his arms around us and said, 'Mom and Nana, I'm glad we have us. That's all that matters,'" Cabrices said.
The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the fire, but at this time there are no suspects. If you have any information, call the arson hotline 877-NO-ARSON.
