Fatal wreck blocks I-95 ramp from I-295

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The ramp from Interstate 295 to Interstate 95 south on Jacksonville's Northside was blocked for hours Friday afternoon after a collision between tractor-trailer hit a dump truck.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the 18-wheel auto hauler driven by 42-year-old Osmani Venzant, of Miami, began to merge left to take the I-95 ramp, but its left side struck the right front of the dump truck, causing the dump truck into the guard rail, which crushed the front end and caused it to overturn, spilling its load.

The driver, Fate Johnson, 68, of Jacksonville, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the report, charges are pending.

Troopers say they received a call about the wreck just before 1 p.m.  Because the cab of the dump truck was crushed, it took hours to get the victim out of the cab and to clean up the spilled load.  The ramp did not reopen until after 5 p.m.
