Fate of Duval County Armory in limbo

Armory leasing bill dismissed during city council meeting

DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. – The fate of the old Duval County Armory downtown remains in limbo. A bill that would have leased the building to the Sons of Confederate Veterans was dismissed during Tuesday night's city council meeting.

Councilwoman Kimberly Daniels is the sponsor of the bill. Her proposal would have given the Sons of Confederate Veterans a 10-year lease on the building for just $1 a year. In exchange, the group would be responsible for repairs and maintenance to the building.

Concerns were raised during Tuesday's meeting about the bill. Those opposed to the bill said that the Sons of Confederate Veterans has no financial plan and has been vague about details for upkeep to the building.

The measure was dismissed, but not voted down. Because it was dismissed, the bill can be re-introduced at any time.
