ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – Florida Department of Law Enforcement Agent Rusty Rodgers has been placed on administrative leave for his actions in the investigation into the shooting death of Michelle O'Connell, the girlfriend of a St. Johns County Sheriff's Office deputy.

Three medical examiners ruled the September 2010 death a suicide.

Sheriff David Shoar ordered an internal investigation, which he says revealed Rodgers acted irresponsibly and inappropriately, got too close to O'Connell's family, and kept them believing it was not a suicide and that somehow the deputy was involved.

An FDLE internal investigation is now underway.

Shoar also had criticism for Rodger's supervisor, Dominick Pape, the FDLE agent in charge in northeast Florida who announced just last week he was leaving FDLE for a job in the private sector.
