Felon gets 15 years for attacking Orange Park officer

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A 38-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday morning to 15 years in prison for attacking an Orange Park police officer last year.

Steven McCloud was convicted last month on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and no valid driver's license.

In May, Orange Park police tried to contact McCloud in the parking lot of Orange Park Billiards and Pub. When the officer approached McCloud's car, he tried to run the officer over in the parking lot. McCloud then took off from the area and refused to pull over for police.

Weeks later, Clay County deputies were conducting a checkpoint in the area and spotted McCloud's car. McCloud was driving with a suspended license at the time. Deputies arrested McCloud at the scene.

McCloud is a habitual felony offender with convictions for felony drug possession, forgery, felony fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer and leaving the scene of an accident with injury.
