ORLANDO, Fla. - When a car crashed into a central Florida day care last week, it slammed through the playroom where it hit three children -- killing one of them and seriously injuring two others -- and left 10 more people injured by flying debris, the Florida Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.
The driver of a Toyota Solara convertible was preparing to turn right onto the private drive of a KinderCare in Winter Park the afternoon of April 9 when a Dodge Durango driven by Robert Corchado, 28, rear-ended the car, the report stated. The impact propelled the car over a curb, through the KinderCare parking lot and into the building.
The car smashed completely through the building's exterior wall, as well as an interior wall, before coming to a stop just 3 feet from the opposite exterior wall.
Corchado fled the scene but turned himself in the next day after a statewide manhunt, authorities said. He has been charged with fleeing the scene of a fatal crash and was being held in the Orange County jail with bail set at $100,000. If Corchado is released, he would likely be arrested on violation of probation charges in neighboring Seminole County.
FHP officials previously said Corchado was linked with the Latin Kings gang.
