CLAY COUNTY, Fla. - A 40-year-old man jumped out of a moving car and died on U.S. Highway 301 in Clay County late Monday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
State troopers said Lester Garrison was one of four in a car just north of County Road 218 about 4:30 p.m. when he opened the door and jumped out.
Troopers said those in the car were going home after visiting the graveside of a family member and other veterans at the cemetery in Lawtey.
Troopers said Garrison was sitting in the left rear passenger's seat when he opened his door and jumped out of the car, which was going about 60 mph. He died at the scene.
The northbound lanes were blocked by the crash and traffic was being detoured.
