JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A state representative from Miami has filed a bill that would repeal the law allowing red light cameras in Florida.

Florida passed its red light camera law in 2010.

Jacksonville put its first red light cameras into service in January.

The bill filed by Republican Frank Artiles is similar to one filed in the state Senate last month. The senator who filed that bill said he thought the cameras had become a revenue source for local governments rather than just a way to make streets safer.

Twenty red light cameras are currently active in Jacksonville. For those caught running a red light, the notice of violation carries a fine of $158.

As of Tuesday, the cameras have resulted in more than 16,000 notices of violation.
