Police: Man seen going through victim's pockets

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gainesville Police Department is investigating an apparent homicide of a man in the 1100 block of West University Avenue.

Police said about 5:20 a.m., a 911 caller reported a man lying face-down on the ground with another man rummaging through his pockets.

Officers responded and found the victim lying on the ground. They have not yet identified him. Police said the other man left the scene before officers arrived.

The victim was taken to Shands Hospital, where he died.

The man police said was going through his pockets is described as a white man, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a large build and bald. He was last seen wearing khaki pants and a flowered shirt.

A white "box-style" van, possibly a construction van, was also nearby, police said. They said the involvement of the van and the man is unknown at this time.

The victim is described as a black man in his 50s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a heavy build, grey hair and a mustache.

Police said they will release a photo of the victim at a later time if his identity is not confirmed.
