BRUNSWICK, Ga. – Flags in Glynn County are at half staff in honor of Commissioner Tom Sublett, who was apparently killed early Tuesday morning.
The 52-year-old's body was found before dawn between a boat and a dock at St. Simons Boating & Fishing Club. Investigators said Sublett's death appears to be a homicide.
"I think anyone that ever had the opportunity to meet and know and work with Tom will never forget him," said Woody Woodside, president of the Brunswick-Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce. "He's left certainly a big mark here in the community, and there's a big, big hole right now on our hearts."
Sublett's portrait still hangs on the wall at the chamber, where he served as chairman in 2006. Members remember him as a man dedicated to public service.
"Great leader and provided a lot of leadership for our businesses and our program of work, not only the year he was there, but still he was active, right on up to his fate," Woodside said.
As police continue to search for clues near the water at the marina, people in the community are left wondering exactly what happened.
"Unusual event, but maybe there's something more in the background that we don't know about," John Phelps said.
At this point, Glynn County police detectives are releasing few details about the investigation. An autopsy was conducted Wednesday, but the results were not immediately released.
Those who knew Sublett say his death is a tragedy.
"It's just, anytime somebody in your neighborhood who you see all the time is found like that, it's just horrendous," Berrien Gibson said.
Sublett is survived by his wife and four children.
