PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. - Gov. Rick Scott presented Florida football great Tim Tebow with the "Great Floridian" award Friday afternoon at TPC Sawgrass.
The designation is given in recognition of the outstanding achievements of men and women who have made significant contributions to the progress and welfare of Florida.
"It is an honor to present one of our first of 2013 'Great Floridian' awards to football legend and Florida native Tim Tebow," Scott said. "Tim is a great role model for young athletes, and throughout his career, he has proven to be a true competitor and humanitarian. Tim is not just an athlete, he is a true example of someone who lives to serve others. It is my distinct honor to recognize football legend, proud University of Florida Gator and humanitarian Tim Tebow with the 'Great Floridian' award."
"I am so honored to be selected by Gov. Scott for the 'Great Floridian' award," Tebow said. "It has always been wonderful to call Florida home."
Only 66 people since 1981 have been given the distinct honor, and those honorees represent former governors, civil rights activists, military heroes, Florida Supreme Court Justices and others.
Tebow is in town for his third annual Celebrity Golf Classic, which will be held Saturday, preceded by a celebrity gala Friday night. Proceeds from the event will directly impact the five major outreach initiatives of the Tim Tebow Foundation.
"It's amazing to see what can happen when you can bring people together and you care about a cause and you get on the same team and rally behind one another," Tebow said. "It's amazing to see what can happen to kids' lives and the impact you can have, and that's what this weekend is about, and we're truly excited about it."
