Hand grenade found in road at intersection

Bomb squad: Device appeared to be live

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – The intersection at Palm Coast Parkway East and Belle Terre Parkway were closed Tuesday evening around 6 p.m. after Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a possible hand grenade that was laying in the road.

After the intersection was shut down, deputies diverted traffic and pedestrian away from the area while assessing the situation.

St. Johns County Bomb Squad was called to assist after deputies reported the device appeared to be in tact.

The bomb squad removed the device from the roadway, put it in their bomb trailer and transported it to an undisclosed location where the detonation of the grenade was successfully performed.

The bomb squad advised the sheriff's office that the grenade did appear to be a live device with its safety, locking pin and "spoon" in place.

Investigators will attempt to determine how the device ended up in the roadway.
