Hendricks Avenue serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The Friends of Hendricks, a nonprofit in the San Marco community, put on the ceremony for students and teachers.

"To have a strong elementary school equals a strong community, and Hendricks has helped this community tremendously, so we just had to recognize this wonderful day," said Jane Courtney Davis, president of the Friends of Hendricks.

Duval County Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals was one of the honored guests. The students went through the history of the school, sang their school song, and held a flag raising ceremony to show their pride.

Principal Lacy Healy said she was excited the kids got to learn about the school's long history and that the community has been so supportive.

"I am so fortunate to be a part of the 70th celebration," Healy said. "A lot of great things have happened and are continuing to happen at Hendricks Avenue Elementary each and every day, and to be a part of this is phenomenal."

Healy said there is much more to come with the school, and she's looking forward to the future.
