Hilliard teen dies in ATV crash

Second Nassau County teenager suffers only minor injuries

HILLIARD, Fla. – A 14-year-old girl riding an all-terrain vehicle Saturday was killed when she struck a second ATV, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say Erica Smith, of Hillard, was riding a Can-Am 500 just before 8 p.m. on a dirt road on private property owned by Rayonier, along with a second rider, Chas Harrison, 13, of Callahan.   According to the accident report, Smith failed to notice that Harrison has slowed down or stopped in front of her and she ran into the second ATV.

Both riders were ejected and both vehicles overturned several times.  Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.  Harrison suffered minor injures and did not require hospitalization.

Troopers say neither rider was wearing a helmet.
