Jacksonville high school band dedicates halftime show to JaNay Jackson

Wolfson High School remembers teen killed when van crashed into bedroom

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Wolfson High School paused during its first home football game Friday night to honor its drum major who died when a van crashed through her bedroom last week.

Friday night's halftime show was dedicated to JaNay Jackson, 17, who was a senior at the school and was to be the band's drum major this year.

"I just try not to cry right now. I can imagine her out there just having fun," said  Wolfson student Michelle Givens while watch in the band perform.

Her family, who weeks ago had planned to be in the stands to watch JaNay perform, was invited to stand in the middle of the field as the band paid tribute to her.

JaNay Jackson

The Wolfson family has kept JaNay and her family in their thoughts and prayers for the past week. The marquee at the school has this message for her: "JaNay Jackson you will live on in our hearts."

The teen was asleep in her bed when a van came crashing into her bedroom on August 28. The driver ran a stop sign, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. He wasn't hurt in the crash and charges haven't been filed in the case.

A funeral service for JaNay Jackson will be held Saturday at the Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home off of Hendricks Avenue. A viewing will begin at 4 p.m. and her funeral will start at 5 p.m.
