JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The city of Jacksonville was recognized by e.Republic's Center for Digital Government and Digital Communities Program in its 12th annual Digital Cities Survey. Jacksonville was ranked 10th nationwide in cities with a population of 250,000 or more.
"Technology is a critical component of effective public service," Mayor Alvin Brown said in a news release. "It is so important that we continue to be innovative and expand our reach to articulate useful information and deploy quality services. This recognition is testament to the dedication of the city's Information Technologies Division and it is a sign that Jacksonville is on the move, that we are competitive and that we are making an even bigger name on the national stage."
The Center for Digital Government's survey focused on how cities achieved their goals and objectives and increased efficiency despite tight fiscal constraints in the current economy. Jacksonville's Information Technologies Division supports more than 8,000 city employees at 200 locations, with 6,200 computers, 10,500 radios, 2,300 miles of fiber optic cable and 300 systems. The division saved $3.2 million for fiscal year 2013 by streamlining operations, renegotiating existing contracts and exploring new partnerships and privatizing opportunities.
Jacksonville will be honored at a special awards ceremony concurrent with the National League of Cities annual conference in Boston on Nov. 30.
