JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - One man was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon when a fight between two groups of people escalated to an exchange of gunfire near a preschool center and an early learning academy off Lem Turner Road.
The shooting occurred in the 8900 block of Washington Avenue, where Jacksonville Fire-Rescue responded and transported one victim to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The shots were fired near a strip mall that includes As We Grow Preschool and America's Little Leaders Academy while 13 children were outside on a playground. The students were rushed inside when the gunfire started and the both schools went into lockdown.
"We moved towards the door to get back inside. I told them to duck down as we went towards the lobby" said Abdull Cooper, a third-grade teacher. "They were scared but proud of themselves for following directions and do what they were supposed to do."
Police said they did not have anyone in custody after the shooting, but did find a suspect vehicle in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
