2 rescued from damaged boat at jetties

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two people were rescued by the Coast Guard after their 48-foot fishing boat was beset by weather and damaged at the St. Johns River entrance jetties Monday morning.

Watchstanders were notified of the situation at 2:16 a.m. Officials said a Coast Guard crew from Station Mayport was launched and arrived on scene at about 2:40 a.m.

The two people were safely rescued and evaluated.

Due to the weather conditions, the vessel was pushed onto the jetties and was severely damaged, officials said.

The Coast Guard said it continues to monitor the debris field from the damaged vessel. Currently, the debris field has been reported along the coast from Atlantic Beach to Huguenot Memorial Park.

Command center personnel are issuing a safety marine information broadcast for mariners in the area. The debris is not expected to cause a hazard to navigation.
