2 teens arrested in Avondale violent carjacking

Police say aftermath was captured in Facebook video

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two teenagers were arrested in connection with a violent carjacking in the city's Avondale neighborhood Saturday afternoon, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office

Rahmaan Muhammad, 15, and Dejuan Walker, 16, were booked into the Duval County Jail as juveniles on charges including carjacking and dealing in stolen property.

According to Sheriff's Office reports, a woman told police that she and her 41-year-old brother went outside to load some stuff into black Honda Civic when she observed two teenagers on bicycles ride past her home at the Riviera Apartments on St. Johns Avenue. Shortly after, police said, the same two teenagers emerged from the side of the apartments and walked toward them.

Police said the 41-year-old man was in the back seat when Muhammad got into the driver's seat of the car then pointed what appeared to be a gun at the man, saying, "Get out of the car or I will kill you."

The man began screaming and jumped onto the hood of the car then Muhammad sped away, trying to throw him from the hood of the car, police said. While turning recklessly onto Cherry Street, the man was slung off the car and landed on the road, investigators said.

Police said Walker was picked up around the corner from the apartments.

Later, the Sheriff's Office said it received a report that two males were taking items out of a black Honda Civic and throwing them into a dumpster at a complex on Chelsea Street in the Brooklyn area.

When police arrived, they said they found the Muhammad and Walker inside the car and took them into custody.

Prior to police arriving, witnesses said that the two teenagers had tried to sell the microwave taken from the car and then threw it in the dumpster with the other items after no one would buy it.

While being interviewed, Walker admitted to recording the incident on Facebook. The video has since been taken down.

The 41-year-old victim had road rash on his left arm, feet and hands as well as a head injury. He was taken to intensive care at UF Health.

Walker's father told News4Jax Monday that his son was not the mastermind behind the carjacking and just got caught up in what was happening. He also said that his son is upset that the man was hurt and hopes to contact him and apologize.

"Sweetie, I'm not going to discuss anything that I'm not aware of, so thank you for your time," Muhammad's mother said to News4Jax.
