30 dogs rescued from Northside property with more than 60 animals

Animal Control shelter full, needs people to adopt pets

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – About 30 dogs rescued Wednesday from a Northside home that was overflowing with animals have filled the Duval County Animal Control shelter to the brim.

More than 60 dogs were living on the property until the owner called Animal Control, begging for help.

“We started yesterday by bringing in 25-30 dogs,” said Jennifer Walter with Animal Care and Protective Services. “She's asking for help.”

The owner, who asked not to be identified, said she called because she knew she couldn't handle all the dogs any more. She said the dogs are randomly dropped off on her property and she takes them in with good intentions, but it just got overwhelming.

Animal Control officials said they got a complaint that the woman’s dogs were roaming around nearby properties.

There are close to 300 animal kennels at ACPS, but Wednesday's pickup maxed the shelter out.

Shelter officials are asking the public to help clear the shelter and will hold an adoption event March 3 and 4. It will be free to the public. For more information, call 904-630-2489.

They said they'll take the rest of the dogs from the Northside property once space opens up.

The property owner has a history with ACPS. She was cited for animal neglect in 2010, has dozens of citations for not keeping rabies shot records and for not having vaccination records or proper tags.

The owner said she wants people to know she's no longer taking in dogs.
