Break-ins continue in Northside neighborhood after deadly burglary

Police: Kyle Simpson shot, killed after walking in on 2 men at Northside home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Less than one week after a veteran was shot and killed when he interrupted a burglary at his Northside home, neighbors said they're still dealing with break-ins, many of which have been caught on camera.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said 50-year-old Kyle Simpson returned to his home on Native Dancer Court about 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6 and walked in on Maleek Williams, 19, and another man burglarizing his home.

Williams is charged with murder and armed burglary, police said.

It's a crime that just doesn't happen in the Oceanway neighborhood, residents said. But after last week, Wanda Allmond and other neighbors are concerned for their safety and questioning if a crime like that could happen again.

"It's kind of scary. We could be next, you know?" Allmond said.

Residents told News4Jax Tuesday that the break-ins have continued, and cars have recently been targeted.

"People have been trying to get into cars that are unlocked and just going through everything," Allmond said. "It's scary. And we've only been here since May, so we're kind of new to the neighborhood."

One of the incidents was caught on her neighbor's surveillance camera, Allmond said.

"They came over and check the doors, but we keep our car doors locked so they didn't get in," she said.

Allmond described the neighborhood as a tight-knit community and she said she's now taking on a bigger role in keeping watch of the community.

The neighbor who captured the surveillance footage did not wish to give out the video, but said it was handed over to police in hopes they can find the people responsible and stop them.
