Gunner, a male doberman/German Shepard mix estimated to be about 10 months old, was found Wednesday near the intersection of Dunn Avenue and Interstate 295. Gunner was shot in the left leg, and an X-ray indicated the extent of the damage would require that the leg be removed.

But veterinarians said once Gunner heals, he should be able to live a normal life with three legs.

Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Orange Park donated its time and services to perform the procedure Friday afternoon.

"If we weren't here to provide this type of help or volunteer service, then the patient would most likely be euthanized, which is pretty sad," Dr. Carols Aragon said.

City workers were working with area veterinarians and the public to fund the cost of of the surgery, which they believed would surpass $1,000.

Anyone with information about the shooting or whom Gunner belongs to is asked to call 904-630-CITY and ask for Animal Care and Control. Anyone wishing to make donations for Gunner's care can contact Jacksonville Veterinary Medical Society, Friends of Jacksonville Animals or Animal Care and Protective Services and specify that the money is for Gunner.
