JACKSONVILLE , Fla. – It seems like fast food is a part of our culture, it's everywhere you look. But what about Slow Food? Next Sunday, Slow Food First Coast's 3rd annual Tour de Farm kicks off. It's an opportunity to see and showcase local, clean food from area farms.
Slow Food First Coast says they pride themselves in showcasing the first coasts local, good, clean and fair food system and recognize the vital role farms play in the health of the community, and the event is a chance to honor farms with demonstrated commitment to sustainable growing practices.
The 2014 Tour de Farm will provide people from the First Coast the opportunity to learn about our local food system, according to organizers. The group says people will see where food comes from and have the chance to meet the farmers who produce it.
Individuals, families, groups, and businesses from our region and surrounding areas will select a tour or design their own from an electronic or paper Tour de Farm guide organizers say. Then participants can enjoy the bounty of the land with lunch and local products to purchase.
The groups says the inaugural Tour de Farm in 2011 was an overwhelming success with over 8,000 farm visits. They say individuals and families enjoyed an afternoon of learning and participating in activities at over 20 of their local farms. The second tour grew significantly and boasted 14,200 farm visits organizers say, a 68% increase from the previous year.
