MAYPORT, Fla. – The U.S. Department of Transportation on Monday announced funding of $123.5 million for passenger ferry projects throughout the United States, including $3.97 million to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority to replace the aging slips and fund new docking equipment for the St. Johns River Ferry.
The state of Florida is kicking in another $1 million more over the next year toward replacing the slip walls.

According to DOT, the docking slips have reached the end of their useful life and will allow the ferry service to continue to offer service connecting State Road A1A traffic between Mayport and Fort George Island.
According to the grant application, the ferry serves more than 225,000 riders each year.
Last week, Jacksonville City Council added funds to continue operations of the St. Johns River Ferry to the one-cent gasoline tax extension through 2036.
