Golf classic benefits Operation SOS

Ken Jefferson Celebrity Golf Classic to be held Monday, Dec. 9th

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Channel 4 Crime and Safety Analyst Ken Jefferson is hosting a golf classic to benefit Operation Save Our Sons, a local organization that helps young men who may be heading down the wrong path.

Jefferson is the vice chair of Operation SOS.  The organization was founded by Pastor John Guns, who wanted to make a difference in the lives of young men who may not have a father figure in the home.

"One of the messages that Operation Save Our Sons started with was simply, if you find yourself in a situation, who can you call? I think that a lot of times our young men are not trusting their nurturing systems. They are taking responsibility on themselves and it often ends up in violence," said Pastor Guns.

Operation SOS partners with after school programs targeting boys from elementary to high school.  It works one-on-one with students to teach them life skills, give them a mentor and help them find a job or join the military.

The Ribault Family Resource Center helps connect at-risk boys with Operation SOS.  It gets about 700 referrals a year.

"I can tell you more than half of them are young men that are struggling with a lot of issues-emotional, physical, just angry because they don't have their fathers in their lives," said Sharon Banks with the Ribault Family Resource Center.

The Ken Jefferson Celebrity Golf Classic takes place on Monday, December 9th in the Queen's Harbour Yacht and Country Club off Queens Harbour Boulevard.

It will feature current and retired professional athletes from around the country.
