Jacksonville up for 'Beercity' title

Area craft brewers say, 'It's about time'

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The River City could soon have a new nickname.

Jacksonville is up for the title of Beercity.

Beercity is an online craft brewery competition and this year they announced that Jacksonville has made the list of contenders. Thirty-one cities will compete for the title.

Jacksonville and Tampa are the only competitors in the state of Florida.

Intuition Ale Works is a local craft brewery in town and they said it was about time Jacksonville made that list.

"It says a lot to only have the small number of breweries and still hold a pretty dominant place on the national scale. And it says we have a lot of variety within our community," said Intuition worker Robin Rutenberg.

Craft beer is becoming more popular, and people say they want new flavors from local sources.

Over the past few years, craft breweries have been popping up all over town.

"Thinking about all the other great beer cities in the country, Jacksonville being on the list, three or four years ago, this wasn't even a blip. Jacksonville was a wasteland for beer three or four years ago," said beer blogger Marc Wisdom.

Voting in the online contest runs from May 1 through the 13 and the winner will be announced during craft beer week, May 14 through 20.
