JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A suspicious package was reported Tuesday evening at a Sandalwood apartment complex, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police were called just before 8:30 p.m. about a suspicious device at Wynnfield Lakes Apartments on Wynnfield Lakes Drive.

Police discovered the device on a tree outside an apartment building.

The JSO Bomb Squad was notified and responded to investigate the scene.

Residents who lived in adjacent apartment buildings near the device were evacuated, while those on the opposing side of the device were told to shelter in place, police said.

Some residents said police told them that it wasn't necessary to evacuate, but it was optional.

The Bomb Squad discovered the device did not have any explosive hazards.

Police said they will be continuing their investigation to determine what the device is.
