Larry's Garden: Time to plant tomatoes

Expect to see fruit in 70 to 90 days

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Larry says now is the time to plant your tomatoes! On Larry's Garden he offers a few pieces of advice.

First, start out with seeds. Larry says you can buy a tray and plant the seeds in pine soil. Larry says you can expect to have tomatoes in 70 to 90 days

A plastic top is great to protect them from frost, and Larry suggests putting the tray on the ground.

Tomatoes can also be grown in buckets and other containers, but plants will need at least 4 to 6 hours of sun, and 2 to 3 inches of water every week. Larry says the soil's pH has to be around 6.5.

Larry says good fertilizer insure a good crop Tomato Tome by Espoma will work but his favorite is Miracle Grow.

He says you have to make sure your plants have proper vitamins. Tomatoes can get Blossom Rot, which is a black spot on the bottom of the tomato, and is a sign that the plants need more calcium. Make sure you rotate crops every year to new location problematic with disease.

While we love tomatoes, Larry says bugs love them as well. There are natural ways you can keep them away, by using water and cayenne pepper or water and jalapeno peppers. Larry says Sevin's Dust also works well.
