JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – New evidence has been released in the case against a 20-year-old man accused of shooting and injuring a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detective who was driving his son to school last year.
Kevin Rojas' trial will begin July 17. He's pleaded not guilty to two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of aggravated assault of a police officer, shooting into an occupied vehicle and other charges.
News4Jax on Friday obtained new discovery material, which includes photos and videos that appear to show key moments -- from the surveillance footage showing the purchase of the gun to images of the bullet holes in the vehicle.
The 50 pages of supplemental reports paint a picture of how the shooting played out last March.
According to investigators, Rojas was driving erratically and was pulled over by the off-duty narcotics detective, who was taking his son to school, on Collins Road near Roosevelt Boulevard just after 7 a.m. March 9, 2016.
As soon as the traffic stop happened, the report says that Rojas got out of the white Cadillac and "immediately began shooting" at the still unnamed detective, "striking him multiple times."
The detective then returned fire as Rojas ran off, according to the report.
As officers arrived to help, they were flagged down by someone who told them Rojas had stolen his white Ford pickup truck, the report says.
Officers tracked Rojas down in a nearby neighborhood, where they found him on the back porch of a home. The report says that when Rojas began to a raise a gun at two officers, they both fired at him.
The new discovery material includes numerous aerial images of the neighborhood and the crime scene photos that show bullet holes in the detective's car and the detective's bloody hand radio.
Investigators are also looking at evidence showing Rojas and other before the shooting.
A surveillance video included in the discovery material captures Rojas at a local tire store weeks earlier, looking impaired and slumped over.
In a different surveillance video, investigators say, Rojas' roommate can be seen buying a gun at Academy Sports.
At one point, the report states Rojas told his girlfriend that "this was his last day on earth" as he pointed the gun at his own head, and then left their home.
The state attorney's office believes he went on to use that gun to shoot the detective.
Rojas is being held without bond at the Duval County Jail.
