Officers responded about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday to reports of shots fired in the parking lot of the Walmart store on Hutchinson Park Drive. Witnesses told police that several men got out of a white sedan and there was some altercation between them and a man in a silver Dodge vehicle, JSO homicide Sgt. Jay Farhat said.

Witnesses said they then heard raised voices followed by gunshots.

When officers arrived, Farhat said, they found Perez-Corona in the Dodge with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition.

Farhat said they believe the shooting stemmed from a drug transaction that failed. The shooters left immediately after, Farhat said.

"These guys are bold. It's very well that the victim picked this location because he thought something like this wouldn't happen," Farhat said.

Investigators said they do not know if the victim was the dealer or the buyer.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
