Man wanted in deadly Walmart parking lot shooting turns himself in

JSO: Peter Perez-Corona, 19, dies days after shooting during drug deal

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The man police were searching for in connection with a shooting death at a Walmart in the Regency area turned himself into authorities Monday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Michael Wayne Carter II, 21, was wanted by police in connection to the shooting death of 19-year old Anthony Perez-Corona in a Walmart parking lot in the Regency area last week.

JSO Homicide Lt. Steve Gallaher said Perez-Corona was shot in the head last Tuesday during a drug deal in the parking lot off Hutchinson Park Drive. He suffered critical injuries and later died at a hospital.

Witnesses who were with Perez-Corona told police that they were at the parking lot to sell marijuana to a man, who police later identified as 18-year-old D'Andre Cohen, Gallaher said.

According to the witnesses, Cohen and Carter pulled up in a car, then walked over to the car where Perez-Corona and the witnesses were waiting with the marijuana, Gallaher said.

The witnesses told police that Cohen didn't have the amount of money agreed on and that he tried to rob one of the witnesses of the marijuana. Perez-Corona got out of the car to intervene and approached Cohen, who shot him in the head, Gallaher said.

Cohen and Carter then drove away.

After police identified Cohen as a suspect, they obtained an arrest warrant for him, and he was taken into custody Thursday on attempted murder charges. After Perez-Corona died Friday, the charge was upgraded to a murder charge.

After Cohen was arrested, police learned the man with him was Carter, and also obtained an arrest warrant for him.
