JSO: Shotgun blast goes through apartment wall, grazing 2-year-old girl

Police: 2 men were handling gun in neighboring apartment unit when it discharged

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 21-year-old man showing a shotgun to a friend at a Southside apartment pressed the trigger, discharging the gun into a wall, and a pellet grazed a 2-year-old girl in a neighboring unit, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

"She was sleeping next to her father in an adjoining bed. He had laid down to put her to bed," said Mark Dorner with JSO. “That's when the neighbor’s gun discharged.”

Officers were called about 9 p.m. to the Villages of Baymeadows apartment complex on Baymeadows Road. Police said the 2-year-old was treated at the scene and is expected to be OK.

Austin Blosser, who was handling the gun, was handcuffed at the scene and taken downtown to be questioned, police said. He was not arrested, and no charges have been filed, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The State Attorney's Office will decide on possible charges.
